In the summer of 1971, George Harrison was moved by his friend Ravi Shankar's concern for the millions of refugees fleeing civil war and flooding in Bangladesh by pouring into Ravi's homeland of Bengal in Northern India. George, with the help of his then-manager Allen Klein, organized two groundbreaking benefit concerts at New York's Madison Square Garden to raise funds to alleviate the suffering and promote worldwide awareness of the humanitarian crisis. He managed to assemble an all-star line up of fellow artists including Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, Leon Russell, Billy Preston, and, of course, Ravi Shankar himself. This GRAMMY® Award-winning album is packed with astonishing performances and makes for a rousing listening experience. The historic collection, now celebrating its 40th year, also contains a bonus track â the original studio version of the song 'Bangla Desh,' released as a single in July of 1971. All net proceeds (after taxes), estimated to be at least $15.69 per download of each album, will be donated to the George Harrison Fund for UNICEF at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. iTunes and Apple Records Inc., the artists, the songwriters and the publishers will keep no income from each album sale and have waived all fees. George Harrison And Ravi Shankar 1997 PhotographerThe Concert for Bangladesh
I loved this concert, one of the first ones that I watched in the Movie theater, I was 13 years old, RIP George

I sat 5th row at Madison Square Garden, and was awestruck the entire concert. Billy Preston played keyboards unbelievably. Ravi Rockedâ¦. George was his BEST ever, and my hero Bob Dylan made me cry. I was 24 at the time. I went to Fillmore East EVERY Friday night for two years and only once or twice saw a better concert than this.
CSNY, The Who doing Tommy for an entire week, and Sly and the Family Stone marching out onto 2nd Ave with the entire audience following. I can't wait to SEE it live all over againâ¦. Much Love Simply the best!
The original charity concert and still the best. The term 'superstar' is used far too loosely these days, but it certainly applies to this all-star cast. If you haven't heard this you are in for a treat. Enjoy.
